This week we visited Lisa Wixell Design in Barcelona. Swedish function and comfort plus metropolitan pulse of Barcelona
Lisa Wixell is a fashion-designer from Sweden. She started to travel a lot when she was younger and saw a lot of different countries and cultures, but when she was in Spain, she felt like being at home. Lisa really liked the atmosphere of the country since people are so nice and open-minded. Regarding the inspiring and dynamic environment, she thought that this would be a great place to start a business. She has been living in Barcelona for 16 years now.
First, she sold ready to wear fashion-collections to Scandinavian shops for 7 years and than opened a shop in Borne with her own designs exclusively.
Since she always used a lot of lace for her pieces, and because there where so many clients going to weddings, they started to ask her, if she could do wedding dresses. So, she thought about it and started designing wedding and party dresses 7 years ago. Now she has got a new Atelier and showroom in Barcelona.
2 years ago, she met Roberta. Lisa’s husband and Roberta’s grandfather are both from Chile, knowing each other, and this brought the two together. Roberta started as her assistant. She is now taking care of marketing, press and their community. Lisa concentrates on her designs and being creative.
When Lisa finds new fabrics, they inspire her to create something new. She asks herself “what can I do with this? “and then starts mixing and matching different fabrics and colours. That’s how her designs come to life. Her dresses are simple and easy to wear but still feminine. They focus on comfort and great fabrics. Most of the dresses are designed without any buttons or zippers and are created out of stretchy, soft and floaty fabrics.
Lisa’s philosophy is, that you should not have to choose and enjoy life, make the best of everything and every moment. She mixes good things, breakes the rules and standards so that every woman of every size can feel good in their skin, when they wear her dresses.
You can always have a personalized dress based on her collection. This guarantees creating the perfect dress, just within 3-4 weeks. If necessary, it is also possible to do express designs.
One thing that makes her dresses unique is the fact, that most of them are switchable. That means, you can turn them inside out and then you have a different colour and fabric. She never uses traditional lining fabrics. So, it is like having two dresses in one. Also, some of her party dresses are two-sized: with a sewn-in elastic band, you can make the dress tighter (great to exchange dresses with your best friend :-))
Lisa likes to call her designs “evergreen” because they are always in trend. She doesn’t feel the need of following trends. The most important inspiration is the female body with its different curves and beauty. Most women know what suits them best cording less the trend of the season. She prefers creating her own trends and new designs. For example, one of her new favourite pieces, are simple dresses topped with a romantic lace-cape or coat to give it an extra touch (also called: layers on layers or lager p`lager).
Another fun fact about the dresses is, that you can wear some of them in everyday life. Just top them off with a jeans or leather jacket, put your favourite sneakers on and you are good to go.
By reading all of this, some of you will think, that they could never afford such a unique and handmade dress. But no worries: Lisa’s dresses start at a price of 349€ and up to 699€. Of course, it always depends on your wishes regarding the fabric and details, but normally a wedding dresses is affordable under 1.000€.
